I'm not sure there is any resolution for this, as Workgroup Manager no longer functions properly when adding alternative home directory servers, and if you add one directly to the LDAP, it 'self-heals' away after the next restart of Server. To the best I am able to determine, you can only select directories shared (and made 'Available for home directories' on the local machine that Server.app is configured on. Marginally related, with the way that Server.app assigns home directories in 10.8 and 10.9, netatalk has become effectively useless for that functionality in an OpenDirectory environment. As it stands, it very much appears to be an arbitrary path where homedirs reside.

I think that the documentation regarding the sections should reflect that the on-disk location of the home directories needs to reflect exactly the full home directory passed from LDAP.
